Resilience and Triumph Over Trauma

I am Dr. Christopher Romig, MD — a dedicated advocate for mental health and a living testament to the power of resilience and healing.

I have faced the debilitating effects of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) following early childhood abuse, as well as complex trauma as a first responder for more than 20 years.

For a time, the hyper-vigilance, flashbacks, and emotional numbness of PTSD threatened to define my life. However, I made a conscious and difficult decision to reclaim that narrative, after experiencing levels of absolute darkness, fear, pain, and addiction. I was spiraling down in a haze of alcohol and drugs to numb the anxiety, the isolation, a wounded inner child, imposter syndrome and SI. I could not sleep.  Fear gripped me.  I held myself together for my kids and my practice, but I was doing it alone, and every night I just wanted to drink to numb the pain.  I couldn’t go on anymore and ended up in the emergency room with life threatening blood pressure issues.

I knew I needed help. I reached out to the wellness committee at my hospital on 3 separate occasions and was sadly ignored.  Instead of support, I was reported to the hospital executive committee and the medical board.

It is very difficult for physicians and first responders to even ask for help because of the shame and guilt associated.  Thankfully I did find someone that has helped other physicians like me for over 30 years and I am alive today because of her dedication to guiding others to overcome trauma and addiction.

Recovery is often a winding and difficult path to follow. My sober date is April 3rd, 2021 and it was truly, truly the darkness that taught me to see and embrace the light. My healing journey involved many different therapy modalities, including therapy, hypnotherapy, SGB, ketamine sessions, breath work, grounding and with God, a deeply spiritual surrender into forgiveness, grace and healing my inner child and ego.

I have lost dear friends, colleagues and family members to addiction, and suicide. I have been at the precipice of leaving this world myself.  I know the courage and silence that is needed to hear God’s whispers of embracing life.

I have now dedicated my life to helping others overcome trauma, anxiety and depression. I work with amazing mental health care providers to tailor individual treatments to achieve a balance:  holistic wellness of mind, body and spirit. I now channel my energy into advocacy work, foundations, public speaking, writing, and being a physician that always has his door open to help those that need it most.

I firmly believe that trauma does not have to be a life sentence; it can be the catalyst for discovering immense inner strength and forging a life of deeper purpose and connection.

My story is not just about surviving; it's about courageously navigating the path of healing to achieve post-traumatic growth and inspiring others to do the same.
